I attended a conference yesterday where business and leadership concepts entered the realm of magic…
I attended a leadership conference yesterday and one of the keynote speakers was Andrew Bennett. What’s most peculiar about Andrew isn’t so much that he founded a leadership development consultancy – which you would expect when sitting in a leadership conference – but more that he has been a magician for over 40 years and is a member of London’s Magic Circle. Airy fairy magic and down to earth business are two concepts I had not often heard in the same sentence.
His presentation was interesting and filled with magic tricks to help us understand various leadership concepts. What I was most surprised to learn was the meaning of the word ‘Abracadabra’.
‘Abracadabra’ would actually be a Hebrew phrase which means “I create what I speak”. Magicians speak these words so the things in front of them appear or disappear. So the meaning “I create what I speak” makes perfect sense to them…
But what if we take this sentence out of its magic realm and apply it to our day-to-day lives? Do the words we use impact the things we create around us?
Absolutely! Many studies have shown the impact words have on our lives, the ones of others and even our environment (there’s been a most unusual experiment about the latter involving water, crystals and positive and negative words) .
So it’s important to check in at times and make sure our words support the life we want for ourselves. Here are a few tips to help you:
The first step is to identify your vision. In other words, where do you want to be? What do you want to create through your work? Your relationships? Your life? Once you have that vision well established, ask yourself:
- What stories am I telling about myself?
- What sort of language do I use?
- How do I define myself?
- What are my thoughts and words focussed on?
Do the answers to the questions above align with the vision you have created for your life? With who you want to be? If not, bring awareness to how you think and speak and make necessary changes.
It may not help you pull a rabbit out of a hat, but it will better support you to achieve your dreams… Abracadabra! 😉
