Getting back on track...

Motivation’s two allies

Can you think of a goal you’ve had for which you were so motivated, only to find yourself losing that eagerness overtime? What made that strong desire you initially had burning for this goal, simply disappear? I bet you, it was one of two reasons.

Can you think of a goal you’ve had for which you were so motivated, only to find yourself losing that eagerness overtime? What made that strong desire you initially had burning for this goal, simply disappear? I bet you, it was one of two reasons.

‘Interest’ or ‘faith in success’ are the two secret ingredients that underpin motivation. And so when you’re starting to feel a bit blah, tackling one of these two areas might put yourself back on track.

If your level of interest is the issue, look at how you could add to, remove from or change the situation. You could also try to find something good about it, for example, the reward you’ll get from accomplishing the goal.

If you still have strong interest for it yet you’re finding yourself demotivated, then perhaps you have stopped believing you could make it happen – consciously or not. Your confidence may have dropped. If that’s the case, the solution may be to seek support, learn appropriate skills or even change your end goal. Of course in many cases, this ‘thing’ we’re motivated to achieve involves other people, and however hard we try, their opposite attitude, point of view or behaviour can make us lose faith in success. But perhaps the problem is simply that they haven’t been able to find the motivation themselves? Could they be presented with the goal in a way that appeals to their interests and shows them the path to success?

What does all this mean for you? Where are you lacking some motivation in your life and what aspect – interest or faith in success – do you need to tackle? What does it mean for how you motivate your people – at work like at home?
